France, Britain and others allowed to intervene in Myanmar ICJ genocide case

Finally, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Britain and the Maldives are allowed to intervene in Gambia’s Myanmar genocide case with the International Court of Justice, the ICJ said in a statement on Wednesday, according to Reuters.

The countries had asked to intervene in the case at the ICJ, also known as the World Court, in November 2023.

“The seven States concerned will be allowed to submit their written observations on the subject-matter of their interventions,” the ICJ also said in the statement.

“The Court will determine at a later date whether they should be authorised to make observations in the course of the oral proceedings.”

In 2017 Gambia, a predominantly Muslim West African country, filed a case against Myanmar at the ICJ accusing it of committing genocide against the Rohingya, a minority Muslim group in Myanmar.

A United Nations fact-finding mission concluded that a 2017 military campaign by Myanmar that drove 730,000 Rohingyainto neighbouring Bangladesh had included “genocidal acts”.

Myanmar has denied genocide, rejecting the UN findings as “biased and flawed”. It says its crackdown was aimed at Rohingya rebels who had carried out attacks.

The World Court rejected Myanmar’s objections to the genocide proceedings in July 2022, paving the way for the case to be heard in full but no date has yet been set.

Riyad Mahrez celebrates his marriage to Taylor Ward for 3rd time

Algerian and Al-Ahli Saudi player Riyad Mahrez caught all social media users’ attention by celebrating his marriage to British Taylor Ward for 3rd time in a huge traditional Algerian wedding.

The wedding topped trends after the bride appears wearing a unique traditional Algerian costumes like “Kaftan” and “Karakou”, reflecting her appreciation and love of the  Algerian culture.

Ward shined in her wedding costumes; she wore a long white Kaftan adorned with eye-catching embroideries and a black Kaftan decorated with gold needlepoints. Mahrez also sparkled in an oily colour Karakou.

Mahrez and Ward celebrated their marriage for the first time in January 2022, but it wasn’t a huge one due to Coronavirus.

Warren Buffett changes his will

93-year-old chairperson of Berkshire Hathaway Warren Buffett has changed his will, telling the Wall Street Journal that he doesn’t continue donations to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation after he dies. He will put his wealth in a new charitable trust overseen by his three children, Buffett added.

“The Gates Foundation has no money coming after my death,” Buffett told the Journal.

Buffett told the Journal he has changed his will several times, and he put together the newest plan due to the trust he has in his children’s values and how they will distribute his wealth, according to CNN.

Each of Buffett’s children has their own philanthropic organisations.

“I feel very, very good about the values of my three children, and I have 100 per cent trust in how they will carry things out,” Buffett told the Journal.

Previously, Buffett had said his will stated that more than 99 per cent of his estate was earmarked for philanthropic usage to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the four charities connected to his family: the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, Sherwood Foundation, Howard G. Buffett Foundation and NoVo Foundation.

Argentina reaches Copa America semifinals

Lionel Messi stepped up to take Argentina’s first penalty kick in a Copa America shootout against Ecuador, just like he did in the 2022 World Cup final victory over France.

Only this time, Messi hit the crossbar, jeopardising a trip to the semifinals.

“I was pretty upset,” he said, “but at the same time I was secure.”

He had confidence in goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, who saved Argentina’s bid for a second straight Copa America title,

Martínez stopped shootout attempts by Ángel Mena and Alan Minda, and Argentina advanced to the Copa America semifinals with a 4-2 victory on penalty kicks following a 1-1 draw Thursday night

“We know what Dibu is capable of, that he really thrives on those moments. He really enjoys them,” Messi said about Martínez, using the goalkeeper’s nickname.

Argentina conceded a tying goal to Ecuador in second-half injury time but rebound and won the quarterfinal when NicolásOtamendi beat Alexander Domínguez with the winning kick.

“I wasn’t ready to go home,” Martínez said. “This team deserved to advance. They complicated us a lot. They played a great match, very physical. We knew they were one of the top rivals in Copa America.”
