BRUSSELS – President of the EU Commission Ursula von der Leyen asserted the importance of making sure that the vaccine manufacturing technology is fully transferred to the African continent.
Speaking at the second day activities of the Sixth European Union (EU) – African Union (AU) Summit in Brussels on Friday, with the participation of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, Von der Leyen said there is a new technology that is being developed in Africa to be owned by the Africans with the support of an European team in cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO).
Some 40 million euros were invested in efforts to combat the coronavirus pandemic, she said, adding that the EU targets driving the vaccine production level in Africa to 60 % by 2040.
