Egypt’s Armed Forces have released a new episode of the documentary series “Hekayat Batal” (A Hero’s Story), recounting the life and sacrifice of Captain Ahmed Gouda El-Sayed, an officer remembered by comrades for his kindness, dedication and deep concern for the soldiers under his command during Egypt’s counter-terrorism operations in North Sinai.
The episode, published on the official platforms of military spokesperson Brigadier General Staff Gharib Abdel Hafez, forms part of an ongoing effort to document the stories of servicemen who laid down their lives defending the nation.
Through testimonies from fellow officers and lifelong friends, the documentary portrays Ahmed Gouda as a beloved commander whose relationships extended far beyond military service.
Friends who had known him since their days at the Military Academy described him as one of the finest personalities they had ever encountered, both as an officer and as a friend. Those who served alongside him recalled his passion for his profession and his devotion to the men under his responsibility.
In addition to his combat duties, Ahmed was known for helping soldiers with their personal and social problems, believing that a soldier who felt supported would perform his duties better.
“He always listened to them, understood their problems and tried to solve them,” one of his comrades recalled.
Serving with the Rapid Intervention Forces, Ahmed embraced the principle of constant readiness, preparing himself and his men to respond to any mission at any time.
According to fellow officers, he believed that success in Sinai depended on teamwork and mutual protection.
“We all worked for one another,” a comrade said. “Ahmed always believed that our duty was to protect our men and bring everyone home safely.”
On 18 February 2018, Ahmed Gouda took part in a raid targeting terrorist elements in a highly dangerous area of Rafah. Despite multiple explosive devices planted along the route, the force continued its advance toward the objective.
As the operation unfolded, terrorist elements opened fire on the assault force.
During the engagement, Ahmed was struck by a sniper’s bullet while leading from the front.
His comrades immediately moved to protect and evacuate him, but the loss was devastating for those who had shared every moment of service with him.
“We had breakfast together that morning,” one officer recalled. “We were talking about our plans, our next leave and where we would go together. None of us imagined it would be the last time we saw him.”
Following his martyrdom, Ahmed’s mother became a symbol of faith and resilience.
When speaking to her younger son, an Air Force officer, she urged him to continue his brother’s path and honour his sacrifice.
“Not everyone is chosen for martyrdom,” one of his closest friends said. “Ahmed was one of the kindest people I have ever known, and he was worthy of that honour.”
