TUNIS – Activities as part of a Tunisian-Egyptian cultural year have started in Tunis with an “Egyptian Cinema Days” ceremony organised at the City of Culture.
The ceremony was attended by Tunisian Culture Minister Hayat Guermazi and an array of foreign ambassadors to Tunisia – including of course Egypt’s Ehab Fahmy.
Such events are meant to enhance ties between the two Arab countries, and reflect attention paid by their political leadership to culture and creativity, said Fahmy.
Indeed, cinema is an important tool that helps shape the cultural identity of youth and protect them against extremist and terrorist ideologies, the diplomat said.
He also added that cinema is also credited for preserving the collective memory of humanity through documenting historical heroic battles and epics.
Besides entertaining, the cinema system has a role to play in terms of promoting awareness and enlightenment, Fahmy acknowledged, noting that this is done through correcting misconceptions and countering dark ideologies.
Guermazi, for her part, said this event is meant to strengthen and upgrade the level of cultural exchange between Tunisia and Egypt.
She and Fahmy honored Djebrial Khoury and Hassan Daldoul, who co-operated to release the first ever Egyptian-Tunisian movie, “El Saqqa Mat”, in 1977.
