The British Council hosted Egypt’s Minister of Education and Technical Education, Mohamed Abdel Latif, along with a high-profile delegation from the Ministry, including Dr. Hanem Ahmed, Advisor to the Minister on Partnerships, for an official visit to the United Kingdom from February 3 to 5.

The visit aimed to enhance cooperation between Egypt and the UK in key areas such as quality assurance in schools, inclusion, teacher development, and curriculum reform.

The delegation gained valuable insights into the UK’s education system and engaged with key stakeholders through a series of high-level meetings with government officials, regulatory bodies, and educational institutions.

Mark Howard, British Council Director in Egypt, commented:

“It was a real pleasure to accompany Minister Abdel Latif to the UK. Our goal was to provide insights into the UK education system and foster continued bilateral collaboration. It was encouraging to hear the Minister acknowledge the UK’s influence in developing Egypt’s education system, particularly in English language teaching and capacity building. At the British Council, we remain committed to promoting high-quality English teaching, learning, and assessment in state education. The Minister’s passion for improving Egypt’s education system was evident, and we will continue to support efforts to provide young Egyptians with the best opportunities.”

The visit commenced on February 3 with a strategic meeting between the delegation and British Council leadership to explore collaboration in school education. The delegation also met with Ofsted representatives to discuss quality assurance, methods for evaluating school effectiveness, and the role of AI in tracking academic progress and curriculum delivery.

A key session, chaired by Sir Martyn Oliver, Chief Inspector of Ofsted, aligned with Egypt’s objectives to strengthen its education system. Additionally, the delegation held a bilateral meeting with Catherine McKinnell, UK Minister for School Standards, to discuss curriculum reform, England’s Continuing Professional Development (CPD) framework for teachers, and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

Egypt’s Ambassador to the UK, Sherif Kamel, also attended, underscoring the significance of these discussions.

The visit concluded on February 5 with a tour of Mulberry Academy, where the delegation observed inclusive education practices and identified strategies that could inform Egypt’s approach to inclusion.

This visit reaffirmed the commitment of both the UK and Egypt to fostering educational exchange and knowledge sharing. By engaging with leading institutions and experts, the delegation gained valuable insights that will support Egypt’s ongoing education reform efforts.
