The Ministry of Culture has retrieved a painting that was lost more than half a century ago. The painting, “Inspired by the Red Sea Minarets” by the Egyptian plastic renowned artist Abdel Hadiel-Gazzar, was lost in 1971.
When news was out on the sale of the painting, the ministry’s Fine Arts Sector issued a warning statement prohibiting the sale, saying the artwork was registered as a property of the Egyptian state, and is integral part of the Egyptian cultural and heritage identity and the plastic arts movement.
Soon after the warning statement was issued, the owner of the painting contacted el-Gazzar’s daughter, and expressed desire to hand the painting over to the Ministry of Culture.
Then Minister of Culture Inas Abdel Dayem formed a specialised committee to examine the painting and verify it is original. Modern devices were used and it was found that the painting is an original one dating back to 1964.
Minister Abdel Dayem decided to place the painting in the Museum of Modern Egyptian Art, to be a valuable addition to the precious works there.
