Top Gun 3 has officially been green‑lit, with Tom Cruise set to step back into the cockpit as Maverick after the major success of the 2022 sequel.
The news was revealed at CinemaCon, ending months of speculation that began after reports hinted a third chapter was in development.
Cruise will again portray Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, joined by longtime producer Jerry Bruckheimer. The script is once more being written by Ehren Kruger, who previously penned Top Gun: Maverick.
This new instalment follows the enormous impact of the 2022 film, which became a worldwide hit, earning roughly $1.5 billion at the global box office and helping draw audiences back to theaters after the pandemic. The sequel also picked up multiple Oscar nominations and brought Maverick back as a mentor to a new group of pilots.
Plot details and the broader cast are still under wraps, and it remains uncertain whether director Joseph Kosinski will return.
Past remarks from the production team suggest that securing the right story has been a key priority before moving forward.
Since its launch in 1986, the Top Gun franchise has remained one of Hollywood’s most enduring action series, with Cruise’s involvement seen as essential to its ongoing success.
