A joint Egyptian-Spanish archaeological mission, featuring experts from the University of Barcelona and the Institute of the Ancient Near East, has unveiled a stunning collection of tombs dating back to the illustrious Ptolemaic era.

These historic discoveries were made during recent excavations in Al-Bahnasa, the contemporary name for the ancient city of Oxyrhynchus, located in Middle Egypt.

Situated approximately 160 kilometres south-southwest of Cairo within the Minya Governorate, Al-Bahnasa is a site that has captivated historians and archaeologists alike. Its rich layers of history have provided invaluable insights into life during the Ptolemaic period and beyond. For over a century, archaeological activities in the region have yielded countless papyrus documents that offer a glimpse into life in Roman Egypt, and this latest mission is poised to add yet another layer of understanding to this remarkable period.

The latest discoveries at Al-Bahnasa are nothing short of breathtaking. Among the finds are a variety of mummies, skeletons, and ornate coffins, alongside unique artifacts that speak volumes about the customs and rituals of ancient Egyptians. A particularly striking highlight includes the first-ever discovery of human remains with astonishing details: 13 human tongues and an array of golden nails used for mummification.

In addition to these significant findings, the excavation revealed a treasure trove of ancient Egyptian texts and colorful inscriptions, some of which are being recorded for the first time in the Behansa region. Such discoveries not only advance our understanding of the religious practices of the Ptolemaic era but also deepen the historical narrative of the area, showcasing the spiritual beliefs and cultural richness of this fascinating period.

Among the tombs uncovered, archaeologists found a remarkable collection of 29 amulets and scarabs dedicated to deities such as Horus and Isis, believed to offer protection and guidance to the deceased in the afterlife. These artifacts underscore the deep-rooted spiritual connection present in ancient Egyptian society.

Perhaps one of the most exciting facets of this mission was the identification of a rectangular stone burial well leading to a grand tomb. This major discovery features a main hall and three chambers, all lined with dozens of mummies, situated side by side. The sight is both haunting and humbling, reminding us of the customs that governed burial practices and the reverence for the afterlife in ancient Egyptian culture.
