The joint Egyptian-American archaeological mission working in southern Abydos, Sohag, announced the completion of the restoration and maintenance project on the Queen Tetisheri Pyramid.

Tetisheri was the matriarch of the Egyptian royal family of the late 17th Dynasty and early 18th Dynasty.

Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Mostafa Waziry said the pyramid has great historical and archaeological importance being the last pyramid built for a queen in ancient Egypt.

“It is also important for the distinctive construction method compared to all the pyramids built of mud bricks in ancient Egypt,” he added.

The mission also uncovered a cemetery from the era of King Ahmose, founder of the 18th Dynasty.

During excavations in the area north of the pyramid of Ahmose in Abydos, the mission discovered buildings that may have been used as houses dating back to the same era.

The project to restore the pyramid of Tetisheri is part of the management and conservation of the south Abydos site, which is carried out under the supervision of the Egyptian-American mission.

Work on the site began in 2018 by a team of antiquities inspectors in Sohag and Abydos, and then a team from Princeton University joined them. The aim of the project is to support and continue efforts to protect all archaeological buildings in the area.

In 2022, the joint mission built a 1500-metre wall to prevent expansion of modern cemeteries and removed encroachments and more than 10,000 cubic metres of garbage from the site.
