6 Days explores lingering love across years 1 - Egyptian Gazette

Director Karim Shaaban’s debut feature film, 6 Days, delves into the enduring, yet evolving, connection between two teenagers who are abruptly separated and then find their lives intertwined through annual meetings.

Written by Wael Hamdy, the movie stars Ahmed Malek and Aya Samaha as leading actors, and explores how time and circumstance can shape love.

The film opens in 2006 with a classic youthful romance between Alia (Samaha) and Youssef (Malek) during their final days of school before exams. Their relationship unfolds during a seemingly idyllic day while they share a movie experience in cinema.

However, their innocent connection is fractured when Alia’s mother suddenly decides to leave her husband, relocating with Alia, her brother, and her other sister.

The sudden departure leaves Alia and Youssef without a chance for a proper farewell or any clear path to reunite.

It is said that the intensity of youthful love, often dubbed “puppy love”, fades with time and distance. Yet, 6 Days suggests that the emotional bonds formed in youth can possess a surprising resilience.

The narrative leaps forward approximately seven years, bringing Alia and Youssef back into each other’s orbit through an unexpected meeting. Youssef is about to graduate from medical school, while Alia works as a waitress in a local restaurant. Their initial conversation flows naturally, as if their years apart were merely a brief intermission. The spark of their earlier attraction reignites, but Alia soon reveals a significant complication: her engagement to her cousin.

Despite this new reality, they decide to commemorate their reunion by agreeing to meet on the same date each year.

These annual meetings form the crux of the film, offering glimpses into the diverging paths their lives have taken. Each meeting becomes a space for them to share the evolution of their personal journeys – their ambitions, their disappointments, their familial challenges, and their individual growth.

However, instead of bridging the gap that time has created, these yearly check-ins seem to widen the gap between them.

The premise of 6 Days bears a notable resemblance to the 2011 British film One Day, directed by Lone Scherfig and based on a novel by David Nicholls. One Day similarly follows the intertwined lives of Emma Morley (Anne Hathaway) and Dexter Mayhew (Jim Sturgess), who share a significant night on their graduation day and subsequently agree to meet on the same date each year for two decades to observe how life has unfolded for them.

While the foundational concept echoes One Day, 6 Days distinguishes itself by firmly rooting the narrative in the specific cultural and geographical context of Egypt. Each annual meeting unfolds against the backdrop of Cairo’s vibrant streets, offering a distinct sense of place and atmosphere that is integral to the film’s identity.

The familiar sights and sounds of the Egyptian capital serve as a constant reminder of the world that surrounds Alia and Youssef, a world that continues to move forward regardless of their lingering connection.

Shaaban’s film intentionally focuses almost exclusively on its two central characters, effectively isolating them within their shared moments. The story unfolds primarily through their dialogues during these yearly rendezvous.

This minimalist approach, focusing on the intimate exchanges between Alia and Youssef, could have potentially led to a stagnant narrative. However, the film skilfully avoids this pitfall by crafting well-developed characters who feel authentically human.Their conversations are filled with relatable ambitions, frustrations, family crises, and personal setbacks, drawing the audience into their individual struggles.

Malek and Samaha deliver compelling performances. They effectively portray the subtle shifts in their dynamic over the years, capturing both the lingering affection and the growing awareness of their lives.

While the premise of the movie may draw comparisons to other films, 6 Days establishes its own distinct voice through its strong characterdevelopment, its evocative portrayal of Cairo, and its thoughtful examination of a love that persists despite the passage of time.

The movie is a promising debut for Shaaban, showcasing his ability to craft an intimate and emotionally resonant story with universal appeal, grounded in a specific Egyptian culture.
