The EGYouth4Climate initiative was the driving-force of the COP27 climate conference to support youth engagement in climate change action.

This statement by Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhi came during a session on the outcomes of the COP28 conference simulation model.

The model was devised by the ministry in collaboration with the British University in Egypt (BUE) and the United Nations Development Fund for the Egyptian pavilion at the conference.

BUE president Dr. Mohamed Lotfy, head of the Environmental Affairs Agency Dr. Ali Abu Sunna, Alessandro. Fraxti, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Fund and Assistant Minister of Planning Hisham Badr took part in the session to review Egypt’s efforts to empower youth for climate action.

Sobhi said his ministry raised awareness of climate change and supported national efforts in this regard as a key partner in hosting the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Sharm el-Sheikh last year.

The initiative, launched in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reviews youth opinions on climate issues, allowing for more interaction with policymakers.

The initiative entails a committee of youth selected out of 1,800 applicants.

The committee offers training to potential youth negotiators in future climate talks.
