CAIRO – Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel el-Wazir discussed Friday with Minister of Local Development Manal Awad the executive status of industrial development projects in Upper Egypt Local Development Program (UELDP).

Discussions mainly focused on the UELDP’s components of development. The program was launched by the Egyptian government in 2016, in cooperation with the World Bank (WB), with the aim of realizing economic development in a number of areas in Upper Egypt, along with setting up a conducive environment for improving services and creating job opportunities generated by the private sector in the governorates of Qena and Sohag.

The program envisages implementing projects and roads in four industrial zones, namely the “Qift” and “Ho” regions in Qena Governorate and the “West Girga” and “West Tahta” regions in Sohag Governorate, through the Industrial Development Authority (IDA).

Implementation rates for the industrial development component of the first phase of the program were reviewed, including devising infrastructure networks (electricity, sewage and water works, fire protection networks, communications and gas in the Qift and Ho regions in Qena Governorate, as well as rates for finalizing installation of utility works in the West Girja and West regions and Tahta, Sohag Governorate.

Meantime, implementation rates for the second phase covering (road works, coordination of the general site, construction of fences and gates,And the main distributors and cables, and the construction and equipment of service and administrative buildings) in the areas of Qift in Qena Governorate and in areas of West Jarja and West Tahta were also tackled.

Wazir instructed an urgent meeting to be held for all companies in charge of implementing utility and road works for the industrial zones included in the program to develop an intensive implementation plan to complete the clearing and road paving works for these areas by May 2025 to achieve maximum benefit for industrial investors in these four industrial zones.

He also underscored the importance of forming an investors’ association for each industrial zone included in the program, as the role of the association would be managing the industrial zone, supervising maintenance of internal facilities, cleaning and security works and collecting maintenance expenses and fees for services from the investors of the industrial zone, in order to spend it on its purposes in a way that contributes to raising the efficiency of the zone, making it easier for investors and ensuring the sustainability of facilities in the industrial area.

As from her part. the minister of local development said the program seeks to realize economic development, including developing industrial zones, modernizing their management systems, involving the private sector in the management process.
