Egypt’s Minister of Local Development Hisham Amna announced on Thursday that his ministry has invested LE65 billion over the last eight years in projects to improve services in Upper Egypt.
Egypt’s political leadership pays great attention to the development of the southern half of the country and improving living standards there, the minister added.
He referred to projects in water, sewerage, oil refining, irrigation and irrigation canals in Upper Egypt covered by the presidential rural development initiative Decent Life.
A scheme costing LE1.8 million to increase meat production was carried out in addition to other projects in higher education and health with the establishment of several new hospitals, Amna said.
The minister spoke of the 7-year Upper Egypt Local Development Programme (UELDP), which has received $500 million in World Bank financing.
Launched in 2017, the programme supports government efforts to improving the local business environment.
The programme entails service delivery in Sohag, Qena, el-Minya and Assiout and integrating citizen and business engagement for greater local accountability, Amna added.
The programme has been recognized by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, which listed it as a best practice operation, he said.
