BREST – President Abdel Fattah El Sisi said Friday that Egypt, as the incoming president to COP27, is calling for intensifying international efforts, aimed at protecting the oceans and seas from the consequences of climate change.

Addressing the audience in the ‘One Ocean’ summit, Sisi thanked French President Emmanuel Macron for his invitation to this event in such critical time, as the issue of climate change and its negative ramifications became a focal point for the entire world.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi underlined the important position of the European Union (EU) within the framework of the Egyptian policy.

Oceans represent 70 percent of the earth, contribute to the international trade movement and navigation in addition to its importance as key source for food, and natural resources.

Locating along the Mediterranean and Red Seas, Egypt will perceive the importance of the seas, which had a share in the extended Egyptian civilization, especially after digging the Suez Canal, which is seen as one of the most significant waterway in the world, Sisi said.

Egypt, for a long time, has took part in outlining the legal frameworks and regulating the economic activity related to seas and oceans in order to ensure the sustainability of the marine resources and protect them from all kinds of pollution, the president said.

Egypt is taking serious steps for clean energy transition, including the expansions in producing the Green hydrogen, to lower the emissions of the maritime sector, he added.

In the international level, Egypt, during its presidency to the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, pushed for launching negotiation track for setting new goals for protecting the environment, led by Seas and oceans, Sisi said.

Sisi pointed out that climate change remained the major tough challenge, currently facing the world, due to its consequences on the life in general, not only the oceans and seas.
