CAIRO – Regional Director of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCHR) in the Middle East and North Africa Ayman Gharaibeh thanked the Egyptian government and people for their hospitality towards refugees and asylum seekers in Egypt.
He made the remarks on Wednesday on Twitter after inspecting the situation during his visit to Egypt and the UNCHR’s office.
“I spent a day at UNCHR Cairo centre speaking to refugees, like Eman a Yemeni widow with six children. A useful talk ahead of my meeting with Assistant MoI to convey their protection concerns on residency issues. Residency is issued based on HCR registration certification,” he said on Twitter.
He also met with Arab League Assistant Secretary General Haifa Abu Ghazaleh to review co-operation between the AL and the UNCHR in Egypt.
During his three-day visit to Egypt, he also met with UN Resident Coordinator in Egypt Elena Panova, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean Ahmed Al-Mandhari, World Food Programme Regional Director for the Middle East Corinne Fleischer, and other representatives for UN offices.
