The Ministry of Youth and Sports has announced a significant collaboration with the United Nations for the fifth edition of the Gamal Abdel Nasser Fellowship for International Leadership.
This prestigious fellowship, operating under the patronage of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, will convene in May 2025, focusing on the theme “Egypt and the United Nations: 80 Years of Representation of the Issues of the Global South.”
The initiative underscores Egypt’s commitment to fostering international development and empowering future leaders from across the globe.
Ashraf Sobhi, Minister of Youth and Sports, emphasized the fellowship’s pivotal role in supporting global development efforts by equipping promising cadres with essential leadership and executive skills.
He highlighted Egypt’s dedication to strengthening the United Nations’ capacity to address contemporary challenges through the promotion of equitable representation for the Global South in international decision-making, the enhancement of sustainable financing mechanisms, and the empowerment of youth. “This partnership with the United Nations reflects Egypt’s unwavering belief in the necessity of reforming the international architecture to ensure a more just and inclusive global system,” stated Sobhi, underscoring the strategic importance of this collaboration.
Elena Panova, the UN Resident Coordinator in Egypt, recognized the 80th anniversary of the United Nations as a crucial opportunity to shape the future through meaningful engagement with young leaders.
She stressed the importance of investing in the skills, training, and capacity building of youth, acknowledging their role as the future architects of Egypt and the world.
“The UN system in Egypt is committed to providing comprehensive support for this fellowship,” said Panova, highlighting the collaborative spirit of the partnership.
The fifth edition aims to disseminate Egypt’s extensive experience in national institution building, promote international youth dialogue, and highlight the critical roles of women and youth in peace, security, and volunteerism.
Furthermore, it will address pressing youth issues, concerns of the Global South, and the importance of South-South cooperation, while raising awareness of the United Nations’ impact on global issues and the Global South’s contributions to advancing international justice.
The fellowship serves as a key mechanism for implementing Egypt’s Vision 2030, aligning with various international frameworks and principles, including UN resolutions on youth, the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework, Africa’s Agenda 2063, and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
