Transport projects boost economic development 1 - Egyptian Gazette

In line with directives of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi to expand a network of sustainable, environment-friendly public transportation for economic development, Minister of Transport Kamel el-Wazir toured yesterday projects under construction, i.e. Sokhna/Alexandria logistical corridor, comprising Sokhna Port, high-speed electric rail network, Ramadan 10th dry port and other facilities underway.

El-Wazir said the high-speed electric rail network, which is planned to cover all regions across the country, would serve new and existing urban and industrial areas, i.e. industrial zones in Helwan, May 15, Burg el-Arab, 6th of October, New Minya, New Assiut and other districts.

He said the high-speed electric rail network (comprising three lines) would create 30,000 direct job opportunities in addition to 36,000 indirect jobs.

The minister noted that the network would also serve tourist, cultural, historical, religious destinations nationwide, especially in Giza, Sohag, Luxor, Aswan, Abu Simbel, and the Red Sea coast. Moreover, the new projects are planned to serve agricultural areas in the New Delta, MostaqbalMisr, Gannet Misr, West Minya, Toshka and Sharq El-Owainat.

These facilities will create logistical hubs linking the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, as well as the north and south of the country. The network is expected to link industrial zones with sea ports, boosting the nation’s exports.

The high-speed electric rail network is a new type of rail passenger transportation that is faster and more comfortable than a regular train by making a design that allows trains to run at speeds of 250 km/h.

The express train has a higher line capacity, which reduces traffic congestion, achieves higher passenger safety, a better impact on the environment, aids in economic development, enhances the infrastructure of the area and helps contain urban sprawl.
