CAIRO – Egyptian Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Ahmed Eissa on Sunday said that Egypt has been achieving unprecedented growth rates in years in the tourism sector, which is given a top priority by the state.
The minister said that Egypt had received five million tourists throughout the first four months of the current year 2024, a record number and the highest since the year 2010.
During 2023, Egypt realised record numbers of tourists, nights spent by them as well as the tourism revenues, Eissa said in statements to Sky News channel.
He added that Cairo tops Egyptian governorates receiving the largest number of tourists, followed by Hurghada then Sharm El Sheikh and Marsa Alam.
The Red Sea governorates of Hurghada received four million tourists in 2023, while Sharm El Sheikh was visited by three million tourists in the same year, the minister said.
The average number of tourism nights spent by tourists in Cairo governorate is less than nights they spend in Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh and Marsa Alam, the minister added.
Answering a questions about Egyptian-UAE co-operation in Ras El Hekma project, Eissa said that the investment by Abu Dhabi Sovereign Wealth Fund (ADQ) in Egypt’s North Coast is a testament for the success of Egypt’s thriving industries of real estate and hotels development as well as the tourism.
