Before establishing co-operation between Italy, Egypt, Libya and the countries of the region in energy and gas exports to Europe, we must work to achieve stability in Libya and regional security in general.
This statement by Egypt’s Ambassador to Italy Bassam Rady came during the Energy Conference in the Mediterranean region in Rome.
The conference was held under the auspices of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“Unfortunately, there is foreign intervention in Libya. Elections were supposed to be held in December 2021, but they have not yet been held,” he added.
Radi went on to say the elections represent the will of the Libyan people and the foundation upon which peace and stability can be built and the state can begin anew.
“We count on our European friends, especially Italy, to put an end to a transition that has lasted for so long,” he said.
Italy is part of Egypt’s strategy for energy co-operation to export electricity generated from renewable energy sources to Europe through an underwater cable enough to supply 450 homes with energy.

“This is just another step in Egypt’s strategy to become an energy hub for Europe in general and for Italy in particular,” he added, noting that the goal is to “ensure Europe’s energy security in the long term”.
Radi also referred to the discovery by the Italian multi-national energy company Eni of the Zohr field in the eastern Mediterranean.
“Without this discovery, Egypt would find itself in great difficulty today,” he said.
He also highlighted Egypt’s strategy for exporting eastern Mediterranean gas in co-operation with Italy, stressing the “great results” achieved by Eni in recent years.
