Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Egyptians Abroad Dr. Badr Abdel Aati met on Wednesday with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi to inaugurate the third round of the Egypt–Japan Strategic Dialogue. The talks aimed to strengthen bilateral relations, activate various cooperation tracks, and exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual concern.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ambassador Tamim Khalaf stated that Minister Abdel Aati praised the depth of Egypt–Japan relations, emphasizing the importance of building on the momentum generated since the announcement of the strategic partnership in April 2023. He expressed Egypt’s eagerness to activate all partnership pillars in the coming phase and to ensure the dialogue is held annually.
Abdel Aati highlighted Egypt’s progress in improving the investment climate through economic reforms, pointing to the country’s strategic location and trade agreements that make it a regional hub for manufacturing and exports. He invited Japanese companies to invest in Egypt, stressing the country’s role in diversifying production centers and supply chains. The ministers also discussed projects funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), with Abdel Aati expressing appreciation for Japan’s support in education, scientific research, and capacity building.
The meeting touched on cultural cooperation, with Abdel Aati commending Japan’s role in supporting Egypt’s cultural initiatives, notably the Grand Egyptian Museum project, which stands as a symbol of successful Egypt–Japan partnership. The talks also explored trilateral cooperation with African countries, leveraging Egypt–Japan ties to support development, peace, and capacity building across the continent, including through the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping, and Peacebuilding. Abdel Aati emphasized implementing the outcomes of TICAD 9 to advance sustainable development priorities in Africa.
Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi praised the remarkable progress in Egypt–Japan relations, affirming Japan’s commitment to further strengthening ties across all fields and acknowledging Egypt’s efforts to promote regional stability.
The two sides signed a preliminary framework for the Strategic Partnership in preparation for a presidential-level signing, as well as an agreement between the foreign ministries on diplomatic training. The third round of the strategic dialogue will continue on Thursday, June 4, focusing on regional and international issues of common interest.
