Egypt’s Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Hani Sweilam highlighted the great success realized by water activities – held within the framework of the 27th United Nations Climate change Conference (COP27) – in bringing to limelight the link between water issues and climate change.
He said this success is just the start for implementing climate adaptation projects in Africa.
He made the remarks on Sunday during a video-conference meeting with Egypt’s permanent delegate to the UN mission in New York Osama Abdel Khaleq and Egypt’s permanent delegate to the UN mission in Geneva Ahmed Gamal Eddin on the current and future measures that Egypt is taking to put into effect the initiative of climate adaptation in the water sector which it launched officially on the Water Day during COP27.
Within the coming few months, procedural measures will be taken to put the initiative into effect as its goals and projects will be decided by January 2023, he said.
By March 2023, an action plan for the initiative will be drawn up, he added.
The minister also referred to ongoing cooperation between Egypt and the UAE with regard to water issues and their link to climate change as the UAE is preparing for the coming climate summit COP28.
