The Egyptian Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade announced on Wednesday that the maintenance operations of the sugar beet factories has been finalized.
A statement issued by the ministry said areas cultivated with sugar beet this year amounted to 620,000 feddans, recording an increase estimated at 10,000 feddans over the previous year.
The statement added that the ministry seeks to increase the sugar production from sugar beet to 1.8 million tons this year.
The official spokesman for the ministry Ahmed Kamal said directives were issued by Minister Ali Meselhi to sugar companies to facilitate the delivery of the sugar beet to factories.
He said sugar production from sugarcane and sugar beet covers 90 percent of the local consumption.
