Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi yesterday affirmed the centrality of the Palestinian cause and the firm stances of Egypt and Jordan in supporting the Palestinian people and their just and legitimate rights, foremost of which is their right to have their independent, sovereign state on the borders of the 4th of June 1967 with East Jerusalem as its capital in accordance with international law, relevant international legitimacy resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.
The president’s remarks came during a trilateral summit he held in Cairo on Thursday with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Jordanian King Abdullah II, Presidency Spokesman Ambassador Bassam Radi said.
During the meeting, President Sisi said that the summit comes as part of keenness to strengthen strategic relations that bring together Egypt, Jordan and Palestine and based on the common will to intensify the level of continuous coordination between the three countries regarding the developments and challenges facing the Palestinian cause.
The summit dealt with the contacts and recent moves made by the three countries at the regional and international levels, to resume efforts to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on the basis of the two-state solution, as the only way to achieve a comprehensive and just peace.
The three leaders affirmed that just, comprehensive and lasting peace is a strategic option and a necessity for regional and international peace and security, and all efforts must be united to achieve it.
The three leaders called for working together to develop a vision that aims at activating efforts to resume negotiations and to work with partners to revive the peace process in accordance with the approved terms of reference.
The leaders affirmed their rejection of the illegal Israeli measures that undermine the two-state solution and threaten chances of achieving peace in the region, including the construction and expansion of settlements in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, the confiscation of land, the demolition of homes and the displacement of Palestinians from their homes.
They stressed the need to preserve the historical and legal status of Jerusalem and its Islamic and Christian holy sites and to reject all practices that aim at compromising this situation.
The leaders also discussed the developments of the political and field situation in the Palestinian territories following the latest escalation in May 2021 and stressed the need to stop such practices that led to this escalation in East Jerusalem or in Al-Aqsa Mosque.
The leaders of Palestine and Jordan welcomed the efforts made by Egypt to stabilise the truce and start reconstruction in the Gaza Strip and called on the international community to exert its efforts to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in the Strip by participating in the reconstruction efforts.
The three leaders also urged Israel to respond to the basic and humanitarian needs of the people of Gaza Strip in accordance with its responsibilities as per the international law.
