The state is keen to safeguard the rights of all citizens on the bases of equality and non-discrimination and by fostering partnership with international institutions concerned with human rights.
This statement by Egypt’s Minister of Justice Omar Marwan came in his speech on Thursday to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland to discuss Egypt’s fifth human rights report, presented in November 2019.
Marwan said Egypt has the political will and determination, which enabled it to take unprecedented steps towards promoting human rights within just few years.
He referred to the presidential rural development initiative Decent Life to living standards for 60 million people as clear evidence of this.
“The political and economic challenges confronting Egypt, alongside with the presence of some cases of violation of rights enshrined in the International Convention for Civil and Political Rights and against which legal procedures are being taken, push the state to make further efforts towards supporting human rights,” Marwan said.
The permanent Supreme Committee for Human Rights in Egypt will follow up the implementation of the national strategy for human rights to accomplish further successes in the human rights field on the grounds of reality, Marwan added.
“All the efforts exerted by the Egyptian state towards human rights are not just targeted at the launch of new strategies and policies in this domain, but rather to guarantee that the rights of every Egyptian citizen are protected,” he said.
“There is no doubt that we still have a long way to go to fulfill our ambition in this regard and we will continue to do our best to guarantee the rights of all Egyptians,” he added.
