Egyptian Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhi said on Wednesday the sports infrastructure in Egypt has seen an unprecedented boom during President Abdel Fattah El Sisi’s era.
Sobhi made the remarks during the inauguration ceremony of a number of national projects in the sectors of housing and roads, in the presence of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi.
The minister cited the opening of 3,758 futsal courts at youth centres and clubs, in addition to the efforts made to upgrade 40 clubs in cooperation with the private sector.
He added that development works included upgrading stadiums in all governorates and inaugurating five centers for youth and sports development as branches of City Club.
Meanwhile, he said Egypt houses one of the greatest sports edifices across the world: the Egypt International Olympic City that qualifies Egypt to host major sports competitions.
In this regard, Sobhi said Egypt hosted 141 continental and international championships between 2018 and 2021, making it the only country worldwide to organize such a number of tournaments amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Egypt also hosted unofficial sporting events meant to revitalise sports and tourism, the minister said, noting 241 events have been organised in the country.
Sobhi pointed out to Egypt’s hosting of the Men’s Handball World Championship in January 2021 with the participation of 32 teams for the first time in the tournament’s history.
He added that the championship was held amid strict anti-coronavirus measures.
