Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has stressed the importance of strengthening governance mechanisms for artificial intelligence (AI), emphasising that the development of this technology is a natural and continuous process and that humanity remains at an early stage in fully understanding its implications.
He further underscored the need to address and mitigate the potential risks associated with AI while ensuring that its benefits contribute to sustainable development and human progress.
President Sisi made these remarks during his participation in the session entitled “Ensuring the Safe, Rapid and Effective Deployment of Artificial Intelligence”, held as part of the G7 Summit in Evian, France.
According to the Presidency Spokesman Ambassador Mohamed el-Shennawy, the participants, including world leaders and chief executives of major international companies, highlighted the growing role of artificial intelligence across various sectors and aspects of daily life.
They also noted that while AI offers significant opportunities for innovation, economic growth and development, it also presents challenges and risks that require careful management.
The discussions underscored the importance of developing comprehensive national strategies, as well as clear legal and regulatory frameworks governing digital transformation and artificial intelligence, Shennawy said.
He added that the participants also called for enhanced international coordination and co-operation to keep pace with rapid technological advancements and to ensure the responsible deployment of AI technologies.
The session further addressed concerns surrounding the security, social, ethical and informational implications of artificial intelligence, particularly in the absence of an effective international governance framework.
In this respect, participants warned that inadequate regulation could undermine national sovereignty, limit the equitable distribution of the benefits of the digital revolution and widen existing gaps between social groups and between developed and developing nations.
The discussions reaffirmed the need for collective international action to establish effective governance mechanisms and promote responsible innovation, with participants highlighting the importance of strengthening capacity-building efforts and fostering partnerships between governments, the private sector and other stakeholders, the spokesman noted.
