Japan lauds Egypt’s role in protecting ME security, stability
President Abdel Fattah El Sisi received a phone call on Tuesday from Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, during which they reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing the strategic partnership between Egypt and Japan. They also exchanged views on key regional developments.
President Sisi congratulated Prime Minister Takaichi on the decisive victory of the Liberal Democratic Party under her leadership in the general election held in February 2026. He underscored Egypt’s pride in its distinguished ties and strategic partnership with Japan, Presidency Spokesman Ambassador Mohamed el-Shennawy said.
For her part, Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi expressed appreciation for President Sisi and reaffirmed her government’s commitment to maintaining strategic relations with Egypt. She also highlighted Japan’s pride in its developmental role in implementing major Egyptian national projects.
The phone discussions also reviewed the progress of bilateral relations, with President Sisi noting the growing momentum across various areas of co-operation, particularly in education.
He voiced hope for further expansion of the Egyptian-Japanese Schools nationwide. He also praised Japan’s significant contribution to several flagship projects, including the Grand Egyptian Museum.
President Sisi also said he looked forward to welcoming Prime Minister Takaichi to Egypt in the near future to discuss ways of enhancing bilateral co-operation across multiple sectors, including increasing Japanese investment and expanding inbound tourism from Japan to Egypt.
The call also addressed a number of regional issues of mutual concern, particularly the Iranian crisis. Both sides stressed the importance of reaching a peaceful settlement that would spare the region the consequences of escalation and prevent further adverse impact on the global economy.
In this context, President Sisi reaffirmed Egypt’s firm support for the security and sovereignty of the Gulf states, as well as Iraq and Jordan. He also reviewed Egypt’s efforts to help resolve the crisis, in addition to the ongoing initiatives aimed at implementing the second phase of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza Strip and ensuring the delivery of sufficient humanitarian assistance to the enclave’s residents.
Japan’s Prime Minister Takaichi, in turn, voiced her country’s strong appreciation for Egypt’s pivotal role under President Sisi’s leadership in safeguarding regional security and stability. She also affirmed her government’s keenness to strengthen political consultation and co-ordination with Egypt regarding current regional and international developments.
