Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi was briefed on Wednesday on the plan of the Ministry of Awqaf (Religious Endowments) for training new preachers and imams, as well as investments and revenues of Awqaf assets.

The latest developments of the plan were reviewed by Awqaf Minister Mohamed Mokhtar Gomaa, Presidency Spokesman Ahmed Fahmy said.

The plan aims to train and qualify new preachers and imams at the hands of senior specialists in religious sciences, humanities and social and cultural studies, Fahmy added.

President Sisi gave directives to carry on with these efforts in a sustainable manner, in order to boost preachers’ expertise and ability to keep pace with contemporary issues in a moderate and enlightened way, in line with true tolerant Islamic religion, the spokesman added.

The meeting also reviewed the executive situation of the ministry’s plan to post preachers, imams and Holy Qur’an reciters to various countries during the holy month of Ramadan, in light of Egypt’s pioneering role in this respect.

President Sisi directed the minister to choose the best elements and prepare them in a distinguished way prior to their travel abroad, in a manner that would help them perform their mission to the fullest.

In addition, the President reviewed the ministry’s on going efforts for the preparation of its international conference, which will focus on discussing the role of modern electronic means in religious discourse, as part of the state’s drive towards digitalisation, the Presidency Spokesman said.

Moreover, Minister Gomaa briefed the president on the latest developments pertaining to the growth of the revenues of the Egyptian Awqaf (Endowment) Authority. He referred to the president’s directives on the preservation and the best investment of endowment assets in a way that serves public interests.
