President dispatches high-level security delegation to Israel, Palestinian territories for stabilizing ceasefire
President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has asserted support for the Palestinian people and emphasised that the Palestinian cause will remain on top of Egypt’s priorities.
The president’s assertion came in a message conveyed by Head of Egypt’s General Intelligence Service (GIS) Abbas Kamel to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas Abu Mazen Sunday, the Middle East News Agency (MENA) reported, adding that the GIS chief was also tasked by President Sisi to hold talks with the Israeli prime minister on ways to stabilise the ceasefire.
In the message to President Abu Mazen, President Sisi affirmed his support of and backing to the Palestinian people in deeds before words and stressed Egypt’s keenness on supporting the Palestinian people and their cause and also to support President Abu Mazen, the news agency said.
Agreement was reached between President Abbas and GIS Chief Kamel on convening a series of meetings in Cairo for the secretaries-general of Palestinian factions, MENA reported, adding that such meetings come within the framework of Egypt’s efforts to unify the Palestinian stance.
Earlier in the day Sunday, the President had given directives for the continuation of efforts and meetings to solve the problem of prisoners of war and missing elements between Israel and Hamas, MENA said.
President Sisi also tasked a high-level security delegation to travel to Israel and the Palestinian territories for talks on stabilising the ceasefire, stating reconstruction and ways of achieving comprehensive calm in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, according to the news agency.
The presidential directives to the delegation called for pushing forward the efforts aimed at ending the Palestinian division and stressed the importance of adopting whichever measures deemed necessary for guaranteeing that there would be no recurrence of escalation between Israel and the Palestinians.
In a dispatch from Ramallah, MENA said that President Abu Mazen lauded during the meeting with Egyptian intelligence chief Kamel and the accompanying delegation Egypt’s positions, efforts and initiative in support of the Palestinian people and their just cause.
Citing a Palestinian News Agency (WAFA) report, MENA said the Abu Mazen-Kamel meeting featured a review of the latest developments of relevance to comprehensive calm, including in Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza Strip, as well as Gaza reconstruction and the Palestinian national dialogue file and the political horizon which is considered the approach for establishing stability security and peace in the region.
Kamel also met Sunday with the Israeli defense minister to discuss ways of consolidating calm between the Palestinian and Israeli sides, supporting the Palestinian Authority and pushing forward negotiations on prisoners of war and missing elements between Israel and Hamas.
