Egypt, Greece to boost military, economic cooperation

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi praised the depth and stability of the strategic relations between Egypt and Greece, the tangible development of bilateral cooperation in various fields and the distinguished level of political coordination between the two countries on issues of common concern.

The President’s remarks came during his meeting with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in the New Alamein City on Thursday, Presidency Spokesman Ahmed Fahmi said.

President Sisi expressed appreciation for Greece’s stances towards Egypt, whether at the bilateral or international levels as part of the European Union, in addition to the fruitful cooperation at the level of the tripartite cooperation mechanism with Cyprus.

The President also congratulated the Greek prime minister on the victory of the ruling party in the Greek parliamentary elections, the results of which confirmed the confidence of Greek voters in the prime minister.

For his part, the Greek prime minister stressed the firm, close and historical ties between the two countries, welcoming the remarkable progress in cooperation over the past years.

He also expressed his country’s keenness to continue deepening relations with Egypt and pushing them to broader horizons at various levels, especially in light of the Egypt’s leading role in facing crises and current challenges in the Mediterranean region.

The Greek prime minister was also keen to extend his thanks and appreciation to Egypt after sending planes to assist in extinguishing the wildfires in Greece.

President Sisi also expressed his sincere condolences and solidarity with Greece in facing the effects and repercussions of the wildfires.

The two sides expressed keenness to speed up the implementation of the agreements and memorandums of understanding signed between the two countries and to boost cooperation in the fields of military, economic and cultural cooperation.

This comes in addition to the energy file and natural gas, and electricity interconnection, as well as cooperation in green transformation sectors.

The two leaders exchanged views on regional files of mutual concern and stressed their shared positions regarding the issues of East Mediterranean.

They also discussed the developments of the phenomenon of illegal migration in the Mediterranean basin. In this respect, the Greek Prime Minister appreciated Egypt’s efforts to confront this phenomenon, especially in light of the burdens it imposes due to hosting millions of refugees in Egypt.

The President affirmed Egypt’s support for the political track in Libya and the importance of holding the presidential and parliamentary elections, the exit of all foreign forces and mercenaries from Libyan soil, and the restoration of Libya’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and stability.

In this regard, the two sides agreed to continue intensive coordination to confront the numerous challenges facing the region, in order to achieve the aspirations of its peoples to live in peace, security and stability.
