President Abdel Fattah El Sisi praised Tuesday the current Portuguese presidency of the European Union and its efforts in support of African issues. He also appreciated the close coordination between the two friendly countries on regional and international issues of common interest.
The president also stressed the importance of continuing and strengthening the mechanisms of regular and periodic consultations between the two countries.
During the meeting with Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa in Paris yesterday, the president also expressed Egypt’s aspiration to continue promoting bilateral relations with Portugal and boosting joint co-operation at all levels, Presidency Spokesman Ambassador Bassam Radi said.
For his part, the Portuguese prime minister expressed his country’s appreciation for the close friendship and co-operation between the two countries. He also stressed Portugal’s keenness to strengthen these relations in various fields. He added that Portugal supports Cairo’s efforts to achieve comprehensive economic development, noting that Egypt, under the leadership of President Sisi, has become an inspiring model for stability in the Middle East and Africa.
The Portuguese PM also expressed his deep appreciation for Egypt’s efforts to prevent illegal immigration across its coasts, as well as for hosting millions of refugees on its lands who enjoy all rights without Egypt requesting any support from the international community in this regard, which is a matter that is highly valued in Europe.
The meeting also included a discussion of ways to strengthen bilateral relations in a number of areas, especially tourism and trade, as well as consultations on developments in the regional situation in light of the challenges facing the Middle East region. The two sides agreed to continue vigorous coordination in this regard.
