President Abdel Fattah El Sisi reaffirmed on Monday Egypt’s deep appreciation for the strong ties binding Egypt and the Republic of Korea, emphasising the country’s keenness to further advance bilateral co-operation across various sectors.
According to Presidency Spokesman Ambassador Mohamed el-Shennawy, President El Sisi extended in a phone call on Monday his warm congratulations to President Lee Jae Myung on his election in June 2025, expressing his aspiration to welcome the South Korean leader in Cairo at the earliest opportunity, in celebration of the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations and in pursuit of deepening the strategic partnership between the two nations.
Ambassador el-Shennawy said the two leaders exchanged congratulations on three decades of diplomatic ties and discussed shared aspirations for enhanced collaboration. He added that President Lee expressed appreciation for Sisi’s reception of his Special Envoy in September 2025.
The conversation also touched on regional and international peace efforts, Shennawy said, adding that President Sisi briefed his Korean counterpart on Cairo’s pivotal role in brokering the recent ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, underscoring the need for full implementation of its provisions.
For his part, President Lee commended Egypt’s constructive role and President Sisi’s leadership in supporting stability in the Middle East.
Both leaders affirmed their commitment to promoting global peace, including efforts on the Korean Peninsula, said the spokesman.
Boosting Korean investment
On the economic front, the two presidents explored opportunities to deepen bilateral co-operation, with a particular focus on attracting Korean investment in strategic sectors such as artificial intelligence, ICT, shipbuilding, and the automotive industry — emphasising the importance of localising these industries in Egypt.
Prospects for collaboration in education and higher education were also reviewed, including the proposal to establish a Korean university in Egypt in partnership with local institutions.
In this respect, President Lee highlighted Egypt’s role as a cultural gateway, noting it was the first country to host a Korean cultural centre. He also announced plans to inaugurate two additional centres in Cairo to further promote Korean culture.
Additionally, President Lee extended congratulations on the upcoming opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum.
The presidential spokesman added that the two leaders concluded the call by exchanging congratulations on the qualification of their national teams for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, celebrating this shared moment of sporting pride.
