CAIRO – Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi attaches special importance to promoting the pharmaceutical industry, which is considered as one of the strategic industries in the nation, affirmed Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli.

Mabdouli also pointed out to President Sisi’s constant directives to support Egypt’s global competitiveness in this sphere.

Meanwhile, Madbouli received a report from Chairman of the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA) Tamer Essam that the EDA was able to achieve high maturity level in the World Health Organisation (WHO) classification.

Last Wednesday, WHO announced that Egypt has reached maturity level 3. This means that the national medical products regulatory agency has been found to function well and that it could be eligible for inclusion into the transitional WHO Listed Authorities, a list that will comprise the world’s regulators of reference – that is, regulatory authorities that should be globally recognised as meeting WHO and other international standards.

According to a WHO statement “Egypt has reached maturity level 3 for vaccines regulation (locally produced and imported) and Nigeria for medicines and imported vaccines. The two countries join Ghana and Tanzania as effective regulatory systems on the African continent.”

Egypt is the first country in the Middle East to obtain such accreditation, Essam said in the report, noting that this would contribute to having a more attractive market for investment in pharmaceuticals and increasing the country’s potential for vaccines exports.
