President Abdel Fattah el Sisi Friday inspected the ongoing upgrade and maintenance of the Greater Cairo Ring Road.
Works in this regard cover 106 kilometres of roadway, Presidency Spokesman Ambassador Bassam Radi said.
He added that the Ring Road is being widened to eight lanes on each direction.
Slip-roads to and from the main carriageways are also being overhauled as part of the upgrade, the presidency spokesman said.
The works, he noted, include bus lanes and the Integrated Smart System being implemented on the nation’s highways, which will be of tremendous benefit to motor and pedestrian traffic.
The system will also put an end to congestion caused by vehicles stopping along the road, Ambassador Radi said.
During his inspection tour, President Sisi talked with engineers and officials on a number of sites near to el-Muneeb Bridge in Giza.
The bridge will carry two eight-lane carriageways, Ambassador Radi said.
President Sisi also appraised the work being done to improve services in the area.
The president also assessed progress on the road upgrade in the vicinity of el-Asmarat community and the road links now under construction between the community and the Shinzo Abe Road Axis.
These links will ease traffic in the area and reduce accidents, Ambassador Radi said.
