In an address commemorating Labour Day, President Abdel Fattah El Sisi extended heartfelt appreciation to the Egyptian workforce, acknowledging their pivotal role in shaping the nation’s progress and development. The President emphasised the significance of workers as the cornerstone of Egypt’s advancement throughout history.
“Today, we march towards the construction of our industrial base, a feat made possible by the extraordinary efforts of Egyptian workers to rebuild advanced infrastructure across the nation, laying the foundation for economic advancement in all fields, particularly industry,” the President said in his speech on Labour Day.
President Sisi highlighted the government’s commitment to upholding workers’ rights, announcing initiatives aimed at increasing employment rates, enhancing social protection networks, and raising wage levels. He also underscored the importance of dialogue among stakeholders to address labour challenges, including the formulation of comprehensive labour law.
The President said that he directed the Supreme Council for Social Dialogue on Labour to convene more dialogue sessions among the three constituents of work: the government, employers and workers. These sessions shall discuss various issues and legislations related to work and workers, including the draft labour law, to ensure the law achieves the desired balance in work relations and provides actual and effective protection of workers’ rights.
Recognising the importance of concerted efforts by the state to provide a decent life for all segments of society, with workers at its heart, the President directed accelerating the completion of discussions on the draft Labour Law in the Supreme Council for Social Dialogue and inviting the esteemed House of Representatives to expedite the discussion of the draft law as soon as possible in preparation for its promulgation.
The President also directed the government to increase the value of the minimum assistance provided by the Emergency Assistance Fund for Workers from 600 to 1,500 Egyptian pounds as a minimum for the worker.
He also instructed the Ministry of Manpower boost its role in enhancing the skills and human resources to meet the needs of the labour market, domestically and internationally, and continue to upgrade the vocational training system to provide skilled Egyptian labour. It shall also seek to benefit from the successful experiences of the private sector in this regard.
The President also called for the establishment of a full-fledged training centre to cater to the training needs of job seekers in the labour market, in line with the required international standards. This centre should be a destination for skills development, drawing job seekers in Egypt and the region. He also called for identifying the emerging jobs and their associated sill requirements.
President Sisi also instructed the Ministry of Manpower to develop a comprehensive national strategy to promote the culture of occupational safety and health, ensure compliance with its requirements, and provide a safe working environment for employers and workers, in order to safeguard all citizens: workers, employers, and the public. This is in addition to developing awareness campaigns for employers on the importance to committing to the occupational safety and health standards.
He also gave directives to continue efforts toward increasing the employment rates of people of determination and integrating them into the labour market; and increasing the employment rates of women and empowering them economically, while ensuring they can keep a balance between their family and work duties.
