‘Lessons of 1973 endure — nation builds own future with faith, resolve, and vision’
President reaffirms commitment to building strong, modern state as befits Egypt’s historical weight
President Abdel Fattah El Sisi marked the 52nd anniversary of Egypt’s historic October 1973 victory on Monday with a speech that blended tribute, reflection, and a firm call for national unity in the face of ongoing regional turmoil. Addressing the nation, El Sisi described the war as a moment when the world stood in awe of Egyptian will and Arab unity, calling it a day that brought honour and pride to both Egypt and the Arab world.
The President paid homage to the late President Anwar Sadat, calling him a visionary leader who guided the nation towards both victory and peace. He praised Sadat’s courage in taking bold decisions that altered the course of history, referring to him as “the hero of war and peace” whose leadership shaped a defining chapter in Egypt’s legacy. El-Sisi extended his salute to every soldier, officer, and martyr who answered Egypt’s call at a critical moment, saying their sacrifices ensured that the national flag remains high and proud.
Emphasising that the commemoration is not just a celebration but a moment to draw lasting lessons, President Sisi said the October War taught Egyptians that victory is never granted for free but must be earned through determination, planning, and unity. He pointed to the importance of internal cohesion, state coordination, and faith, saying these were the true foundations of the triumph in 1973 and must continue to guide Egypt forward. Drawing from that same spirit, he reaffirmed his commitment to building a strong, modern Egypt that reflects its true stature and historical weight.
The President stressed that Egypt is working with sincerity and resolve to shape a future defined by strength, progress, and deep-rooted institutions. He said the same principles that led to victory decades ago are now being applied to development, national reform, and long-term state building. Amid continued instability in the region, President Sisi warned that the current environment leaves no room for complacency, urging the nation to summon the same resolve and responsibility that defined the October generation.
Reflecting on the peace process with Israel, the President said that Egypt and Israel had fought bloody wars and endured deep mutual losses, yet still found a way forward thanks to the foresight of Sadat, Israeli leadership at the time, and American mediation. He said Egypt’s peace with Israel was not simply a treaty, but a foundation for a just and sustainable peace that broke the cycle of vengeance and opened the door to regional stability. For peace to last, he stressed, it must be built on justice and fairness—not be forced or imposed.
Reaffirming Egypt’s firm stance on the Palestinian cause, President Sisi said the only path to real and lasting peace in the Middle East is through the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on international legitimacy. He warned that peace built by force produces only resentment, while peace built on justice fosters genuine normalisation and sustainable coexistence.
The Egyptian leader also extended appreciation to U.S. President Donald Trump for efforts to broker a ceasefire in Gaza, after two years of war, destruction, and bloodshed. The clear roadmap of ending the conflict, releasing detainees, rebuilding Gaza, and launching a serious political track leading to the recognition of a Palestinian state marks the correct path towards enduring peace and stability for the region. Concluding his speech, President Sisi reassured Egyptians that their armed forces remain fully committed to defending the nation. He said the Egyptian army stands as a firm shield, unafraid of challenges, and deeply rooted in the fabric of the Egyptian people. Offering respects to martyrs and salute to soldiers safeguarding the nation, President Sisi ended the speech with the words: Long live Egypt.
