President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has emphasised the importance of continuing to strengthen Egypt’s defence capabilities amid the turbulent regional landscape, stressing that a robust military is essential to ensuring the country’s security, preserving peace, and deterring any potential aggression.
This came as the president delivered a keynote address at an Armed Forces cultural symposium marking the 51st anniversary of the October War, held at the Al-Manara International Convention Centre on Monday.
President Sisi’s speech opened with a reflection on the enduring significance of the October 1973 War, which he described as a pivotal moment in Egypt’s history. He noted that the victory not only marked a turning point in military terms but also symbolised the Egyptian people’s ability to transform defeat into triumph.
“We gather today to celebrate a victory that will remain a landmark in the history of our beloved nation,” President Sisi said, adding that the war reflected the strength of the Egyptian people’s will.
The president highlighted that even after 51 years, the October War continues to provide valuable lessons in strategic planning, precise execution, and the necessity of national unity in overcoming challenges. He pointed out that the war serves as a reminder of the power of a united people, able to face and conquer adversity through determination and resilience.
Praising the Egyptian people for their role in supporting the military during the war, both materially and morally, President Sisi stressed that victory was not only won on the battlefield but also through the unity and perseverance of the Egyptian public.
“The October War was truly a story of the people,” President Sisi remarked, acknowledging the sacrifices made by families across the nation. He honoured the parents who gave their sons for the country, as well as the wives and children who endured the pain of separation.
Reflecting on current regional instability, the President emphasised the need for Egypt to maintain its strength and readiness to defend its borders. He pointed out that the volatile situation in the Middle East requires Egypt to keep developing its comprehensive military power, stating that this is essential to protecting the nation’s peace and stability.
“Egypt’s choice for lasting and just peace compels us to continue building the country’s comprehensive defence capabilities,” President Sisi said. He emphasised that maintaining peace requires strength and that Egypt’s military is the safeguard against any potential threat or aggression.
President Sisi also reiterated Egypt’s commitment to regional stability and peace, particularly regarding the Palestinian cause. He called for a just and lasting peace that upholds the rights of the Palestinian people in accordance with international resolutions.
He urged all parties to abandon expansionist ambitions and hostility, stressing the need for peaceful coexistence in the region to ensure a better future for coming generations.
President Sisi paid tribute to the martyrs of the October War and all Egyptian soldiers who have fallen in battle. He expressed deep respect for their sacrifices and assured their families that Egypt will always honour their memory. “To the families of our martyrs, I say: Egypt will remain loyal to you as your sons were loyal to this nation,” Sisi said.
Elaborating, the president praised the Armed Forces for their continued dedication to safeguarding Egypt’s sovereignty and dignity and extended congratulations to the Egyptian military on the anniversary of the war, acknowledging their role as the nation’s “shield and striking arm” in defending the homeland and preserving the nation’s dignity throughout history.
President Sisi concluded his address with a message to the Egyptian people, urging them to remain united in the face of ongoing challenges. He stressed that Egypt has overcome difficult circumstances before and will continue to do so with collective effort and determination. “With unity, sincerity, and awareness, we can overcome any hardship, as we have done in the past,” he said.
He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to continuing the country’s development efforts, aiming to improve living standards and secure a better future for Egypt.
