Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi arrived on Tuesday in New Delhi at the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to participate as a guest of honour in India’s Republic Day celebrations, which coincide with the day when the Constitution of the Republic of India came into force in 1950.
“The invitation of the president as the main guest of honour to this event reflects the great convergence between the two countries and the profound appreciation for Egypt’s leadership, government and people as well as the keenness of the Indian side to strengthen joint co-operation between the two countries as two of the most important emerging countries and their vital role in various issues on the regional and international arenas,” Presidency Spokesman Ambassador Bassam Radi said.
The spokesman added that the President Sisi’s visit to India coincides with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Egypt and India.
The president is scheduled to meet with a number of officials in India, including Prime Minister Modi, Indian President Droupadi Murmu along with a number of other officials, in order to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral relations at all levels.
The visit will also include the president’s meeting with heads and representatives of a number of leading Indian companies in various fields, to discuss mechanisms for strengthening economic relations between the two sides, and to review attractive investment opportunities in Egypt.
Egyptian-Indian trade volume in 2021-2022 increased by 75 per cent to reach $7.26 billion compared to the previous fiscal year, the cabinet Information and Decision Support Centre (IDSC) announced on Tuesday.
This came in an IDSC infographic titled ’75 years of Egyptian-Indian Diplomatic Relations’, with an account of trade between the two countries in 2021/2022, coinciding with the three-day visit by President Abdel Fattah El Sisi to India with a ministerial delegation of ministers.
Exports to India hiked by 86 per cent to $3.5 billion compared to the previous year, while Indian exports to Egypt increased by 65 per cent to $3.7 billion for the same period, the IDSC said.
More than 50 Indian companies operate in Egypt with a total investment of $3.15 billion, providing 35,000 direct and indirect work opportunities, the centre added.
