Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reviewed Sunday the efforts afoot to de-escalate tensions in the Palestinian enclave of Gaza, following a round of violence that began with a surprise attack in which Hamas militants raced into Israeli-occupied territories.
During a phone call initiated by the German official, the two sides agreed on the need for concerted efforts to prevent further military escalation that could plunge the region into a vicious cycle of violence, taking into its grave implications on regional security and stability, according to a statement by the Egyptian Presidency.
Meanwhile, Sisi emphasized the need to address the conflict roots’ causes by supporting de-escalation efforts and pushing for a just, comprehensive and lasting settlement to the Palestinian issue based on the two-state solution and relevant international resolutions, said the Egyptian Presidency spokesman.
