Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi followed up on Saturday on national preparations for the COP27 United Nations Climate Change Conference in 2022, which will be held in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.
During a meeting with a host of Cabinet ministers, the president directed that the conference be prepared for in a way that would reflect the major advances Egypt made in the field of the environment in the past years, Presidency Spokesman Ambassador Bassam Radi said.
The spokesman added that the president said the conference has to highlight the progress Egypt made in the transition to clean energy use.
It must also mirror the concerted efforts the Egyptian state is making to honour its commitments to humanity through the protection of the environment, Ambassador Radi quoted the president as adding during the meeting.
The decision to hold the next climate summit in Egypt was taken during this year’s conference, COP26, which was hosted by the United Kingdom in Glasgow.
President Sisi declared in September this year Egypt’s desire to host the COP27 on behalf of the African continent.
Egypt would work hard to make the conference “a radical turning point in international climate efforts in coordination with all parties, for the benefit of Africa and the entire world,” the Egyptian leader said at the time.
The United Arab Emirates was selected later to host the COP28 international climate conference in 2023.
