Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has affirmed full support for the implementation phases of the Julius Nyerere hydropower plant and dam in order to achieve the best levels of performance in accordance with the highest world standards for construction works.
The project can, therefore, evolve into a pioneering model for and symbol of co-operation, building and friendship between Egypt, Tanzania and all brotherly African countries, the president said.
The president’s remarks came during his meeting on Monday with Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli, Presidential Assistant for National and Strategic Projects Sherif Ismail, Minister of Finance Mohamed Maeet and Minister of Housing Assem el-Gazzar, Presidency Spokesman Ambassador Bassam Radi said.
The meeting was called to review the executive status of action to build the Julius Nyerere Hydropower plant and dam in Tanzania. A consortium of Egyptian companies is implementing the project under the supervision of the Egyptian government.
During the meeting, President Sisi called for carrying out field visits by senior government officials to the dam’s construction site to follow up on the progress of works and the executive position and coordination with officials in Tanzania.
The Julius Nyerere dam aims to generate hydroelectric power as well as flood control to protect the surrounding environment from the dangers of torrential rains and swamps, in addition to storing about 34 billion cubic metres of water in a newly created lake to ensure constant availability of water for agriculture, hunting and conservation of the surrounding wildlife in Africa’s largest nature reserve.
