Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi held a meeting on Monday to follow up on progress in implementing projects to develop historical sites in Cairo, which is one of the world’s oldest Islamic cities.
The meeting was held with Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli, Housing Minister Assem el Gazar and Cairo Governor Khaled Abdel Aal.
These projects included the Citadel of Cairo or Citadel of Saladin, which is a medieval Islamic-era fortification in Cairo, Presidential Spokesman Ahmed Fahmy said. Work to refurbish the site and its surrounding area falls within the framework of the state’s plan to restore the historical features of the nation’s capital, that hosts a variety of historically significant districts and monuments, according to him.
Meanwhile, Sisi gave directives to pay attention to the maintenance of historic Cairo’s urban and architectural values not only as a spatial and functional entity, but also as a cultural and socio-economic asset.
