Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi said Egypt and Sudan have recently submitted a request to the UN Security Council to hold a session for reviewing the latest developments of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) issue due to Ethiopia’s intransigence to reach an agreement on this score.
Sisi’s remarks came on Wednesday in a phone call he received from Congolese president Felix Tshisekedi.
Sisi stressed that the move taken by Egypt and Sudan aimed to facilitate African Union’s efforts to settle this issue and help Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia reach a binding agreement that can protect the interests of the three countries.
The phone call touched upon discussing shared viewpoints on the GERD issue, Presidential Spokesman Bassam Rady said.
Sisi praised efforts exerted by the Democratic Republic of Congo under Tshisekedi to mediate negotiations between the three countries to reach a satisfactory agreement to protect their water rights.
Tshisekedi lauded Egypt’s efforts to hold negotiations to settle this crisis with a fair solution for all parties.
