CAIRO – President Abdel Fattah El Sisi affirmed Egypt’s continued intensive efforts to reach a ceasefire deal on the Gaza Strip, facilitate exchange of hostages and detainees and urgently resume entry of humanitarian aid.
During President Sisi’s meeting Sunday with Commander of US Central Command (CENTCOM) Michael Kurilla, the president praised US President Donald Trump’s efforts toward achieving a ceasefire, emphasizing the importance of reviving the peace process and working toward lasting peace and stability in the region.
Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and Minister of Defense and Military Production Abdel Majeed Saqr and US ambassador to Cairo Herro Mustafa took part in the meeting.
Presidential Spokesman Mohamed el-Shenawy said Kurilla conveyed greetings from US President Donald Trump to President Sisi, who voiced his appreciation affirming depth of the strategic relationship between Egypt and the US.
The meeting also addressed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation and joint coordination, particularly in military and security fields, stressing the need to strengthen this cooperation given both countries’ commitment to supporting regional and international security and stability.
The spokesman added that discussions also touched on developments in the Middle East, as the two sides agreed on the need to de-escalate tensions in the region and pursue political and sustainable solutions to current crises, in order to reinforce peace and regional stability.
The meeting further took up the latest developments in Syria, Libya, Sudan and the Horn of Africa, said the spokesman. Water issues were also raised, as President Sisi stressed the importance of the Nile River issue, being an issue related to Egypt’s national security, he added.
