Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has directed the government to act to improve electricity services across Egypt.

He pressed for action to upgrade the capacity of the national grid to be able to cope with an expected increase in consumption due to the ever-growing population and development programs.

Sisi was speaking during a meeting with Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli, Electricity Minister Mahmoud Esmat and Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk earlier Sunday.

The meeting focused on means to enhance the efficiency of utilizing new and renewable energy in a way that would support comprehensive national development efforts, said presidential spokesman Ahmed Fahmy.

He added that they also reviewed plans to upgrade the national electricity system through investment, particularly in Upper Egypt.

Programs to establish electricity infrastructure in new cities also figured high at the talks, Fahmy said.

The meeting also tackled power linkage projects with neighboring countries, as well as strategies of action with the private sector, the spokesman noted.
