Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi received his Cypriot counterpart Nikos Christodoulides, who arrived in Cairo on Wednesday on his first visit to the region after his election as President of Cyprus last February.
The two leaders discussed ways of boosting relations between the two countries in various fields of co-operation.
Cypriot President Christodoulides arrived in the Egyptian capital early afternoon and was welcomed, upon arrival, by Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Tarek el-Mulla.
He is accompanied by ministers of foreign affairs and energy, the government spokesperson and other officials.
In earlier statements, the Cypriot leader praised the efforts made by President Sisi to support and continue reforms in Egypt, stressing that President Sisi has been carrying out unprecedented reforms for the benefit of his people.
The political relations between Egypt and Cyprus were characterised by the coordination of positions on various issues, co-operation in international and regional forums, especially in the United Nations and the European Union, and the countries’ exchange of support in nominations for membership in various international committees.
After President Sisi assumed the presidency of Egypt in 2014, the Egyptian-Cypriot relations witnessed a great development through meetings and contacts between the presidents, according to the Egyptian State Information Service.
President Sisi made a phone call to Christodoulides, the newly-elected President of Cyprus, last February to congratulate him on his election as President of Cyprus.
During a meeting with former Cypriot president, President Sisi praised the continuous development and rapprochement in bilateral relations between Egypt and Cyprus at various levels.
He also stressed Egypt’s keenness to continue activating co-operation frameworks, whether at the bilateral level or through the tripartite co-operation mechanism that brings together Egypt, Cyprus and Greece.
