President Abdel Fattah El Sisi discussed Egypt’s efforts to broker a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip during a phone call on Monday with newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Sisi stressed the importance of leveraging the current regional de-escalation to reach an agreement that would halt hostilities and allow for the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian enclave, reiterating that the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, in line with international legitimacy, remains the only guarantee for lasting stability in the Middle East.

Presidency spokesman Mohamed El-Shennawy said Sisi congratulated Carney on his recent electoral victory, which he said reflected the confidence of Canadian voters, wishing him success in his new role and expressing Egypt’s keenness to work with the Canadian government to deepen bilateral cooperation.

The two leaders discussed ways to strengthen economic, trade, and investment ties between the two countries, the spokesman added.

Both sides affirmed their commitment to exploring opportunities for cooperation across sectors of mutual interest, he stated.

The call also addressed regional developments and efforts to restore stability in the Middle East, according to him.
