Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi yesterday called for providing support for national programmes that promote climate action as well as to co-operate with international partners to present successful national models to build on regionally and internationally, in line with Egypt’s goals towards the issue of climate change.
The president’s remarks came as he conferred yesterday with Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli and International Co-operation Minister Rania al-Mashat, Presidency Spokesman Ambassador Bassam Radi said. The meeting, he added, was devoted to reviewing the International Co-operation Ministry’s efforts to mobilise concessional development funds related to the issue of climate change.
During the meeting, the president said that Egypt’s goals regarding the issue of climate change are mainly represented in the implementation of pledges and commitments so that they can reflect on the efforts of actual projects on the ground.
The aspired implementation, the president added, comes within the framework of the green transformation approach and in accordance with Egypt’s relevant national strategies.
President Sisi’s remarks followed a presentation by Minister Mashat on the path of co-operation with international development partners within the framework of the National Investment Platform for Green Projects and Climate Action, which is known as the Nexus of Water, Food and Energy (NWFE).
The platform, Minister Mashat noted in her presentation, is a national programme and a regional approach for linking international climate issues with those of development. The approach, she added, involves the mobilisation of concessional development financing for a package of priority green development projects in the food, water and energy sectors.
This comes as part of Egypt’s comprehensive national climate strategy 2050, with the aim of achieving sustainable economic growth, low-emission development and promoting scientific research and technology transfer in the field of climate change.
The minister also reviewed the final preparations for convening the Egypt Forum on International Co-operation and Development Finance, due to be held in the New Administrative Capital next month.
The forum aims mainly to move from the pledges stage to the implementation stage and transform financial commitments into real opportunities for presentation during the COP27 summit, Spokesman Radi said.
