Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has called for starting co-operation with Maersk Group the establishment of an integrated national network for the production and distribution of green energy and clean fuel for ships.
Action in this direction, the President noted, comes in integration with the state’s efforts to transform to green energy and preserve the environment, Presidency Spokesman Ambassador Bassam Radi said.
The President’s remarks came as he received yesterday the head of Maersk International Maritime Transport Group, Søren Skou, in the presence of Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority Osama Rabie and Maersk representative in Egypt Hani El-Nadi.
Co-operation with Maersk in the production of green energy and clean fuel for ships was the topic of consideration during the meeting, Spokesman Radi said.
State efforts to achieve green energy transformation also comes in light of the availability of a chain of modern ports that Egypt now enjoys on the coasts of both the Mediterranean and the Red Sea, in addition to the the Suez Canal, the world’s main artery for trade, President Sisi said in remarks during the meeting.
For his part, the head of the global Maersk Group expressed appreciation for the extended cooperation with Egypt through the Suez Canal Authority, especially now that the SCA has managed to achieve development and keeping pace with the latest modern technologies, Spokesman Radi said.
The Maersk chief also referred in the connection to the continuous upgrading and modernization of the Suez Canal and its infrastructure, thereby qualifying Egypt to become the region’s main and pivotal center for supplying ships with green fuel, Spokesman Radi said.
The Maersk chief then outlined the company’s plan to launch a project to produce clean fuel for ships in Egypt with investments of $15 billion, noting that the project would provide more than 100,000 job opportunities in various specialisations.
The meeting also discussed ways to enhance cooperation between the Suez Canal Authority and Maersk Group, especially in the areas of training, exchange of experiences, maritime transport, logistics, container handling terminals, and marine services, were also considered during the meeting, the Presidency spokesman said.
Maersk is a leading company in the provision of digital and decarbonised logistics solutions for the development and growth of international shipping. Headquartered in Copenhagen, the group operates offices and branches in some 130 countries and aims to achieve net zero climate neutral business by the year 2040, according to the company’s website.
