Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi on Monday asserted Egypt’s firm and historical support for the Palestinian people, noting that Egypt welcomed hosting the meeting of the Palestinian factions that took place in New Alamein City on Sunday to complete dialogue with the aim of ending the state of division and restoring Palestinian national unity.
The president’s remarks came during his meeting on Monday with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Presidency Spokesman Ahmed Fahmy said.
During the meeting, the Palestinian president expressed appreciation to President Sisi for Egypt’s hosting of the Alamein dialogue and its historical embrace of the Palestinian cause and the concerns of the Palestinian people.
President Abbas emphasised that the meeting of the factions in Alamein represents an opportunity for discussion and exchange of views on the best way to achieve national reconciliation. He also noted that the Alamein meeting took place amid vital regional and international developments, Spokesman Fahmy said.
The Sisi-Abbas meeting included discussions on ways to coordinate positions and visions regarding a number of issues related to the Palestinian cause, especially with regard to reviving the peace process, the spokesman said.
Emphasis was placed during discussions on the necessity of preserving the legitimate Palestinian rights, maintaining the continuity of efforts to achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting peace based on the two-state solution and the establishment of an independent, sovereign Palestinian state on the lines of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, Spokesman Fahmy said.
This comes in accordance with international law, relevant international legitimacy resolutions, and the Arab Peace Initiative, in order to achieve security, stability, and prosperity for all the peoples of the region, the spokesman added.
